Because it’s a master piece when it comes to design and usability?
I believe that the smart phone market has pretty much been floating around the last years. Now, Apple has given them a run for their money. I got a SE P1i and it’s a nice phone but it’s hard to customize and got no innovative software as default.
The iPhone got a bunch of interesting features that are very well tied together.
I’m not going to buy an iPhone either though. I’m waiting for the first Android phones.

PS. Example of a nice feature is the Google Maps functionality.
The link is in Swedish, so to summarize what the link is saying (to the english readers),
All the new stuff and the design that came with the Iphone, are beginning to show up in new phones from other manufacturers as well today…voilá you got more brands to choose from and probably for less money.

I’m aware of that.
I’ve tried out a HTC Touch which is quite similar. It’s nice but it don’t have the feeling of completeness and integration between programs. A HTC Touch is 479.95 usd (unlocked) and an iphone is ranging from between 399 usd and 499 usd.
There’s a bunch of others serious and less serious such as DaXian X999, Meizu M8 MiniOne and iSwish. You can get all of those from amazon (used) for about 150 usd if you want though.
And probably the biggest reason in my opinion, you don´t have to go with one certain carrier (Telia for Sweden).

Yeah, Telia isn’t really the best choice they made (or AT&T for that matter). But still, even though there are plenty of imitations (with varying success) I still believe the real iphone is the best phone on the market at the time.
You shouldn’t!
Really, I don’t understand the hype that phone has generated….
Neither do I.

Also, I would never buy a phone without UMTS/HSDPA today…
